Why freshness matters (and what it really means)
Freshness isn't changing the date and calling it new. It's keeping content true, and it's a real signal you can earn honestly.
Search engines reward freshness for many queries, which has led to a lot of fake freshness — bumping the publish date, swapping a word, pretending something old is new. That's not what freshness means, and engines are good at seeing through it.
Freshness is accuracy over time
Real freshness is keeping a piece true as the world changes — updating the facts, the examples, the recommendations, the year. A genuinely maintained article stays useful; a date-stamped one that's actually stale just erodes trust.
Maintain what's worth maintaining
You can't keep everything current, so don't try. Identify the pieces that matter — the ones ranking and being cited — and keep those genuinely up to date. Let the rest age honestly. Freshness as maintenance compounds; freshness as theater doesn't.
Freshness isn't a new date. It's a piece that's still true. Engines and readers can tell the difference.
