Stop building dashboards for executives

Most executive dashboards get opened once at the all-hands and never again. Better to build the question, not the chart.

Every analytics team has a dashboard that the CEO requested, a data engineer spent two weeks building, and approximately nobody opens. The chart isn't wrong — it just isn't load-bearing for anyone's actual decisions.

Start with the decision

"What would you do differently if this number went up versus down?" If the answer is "nothing" or "I'd ask more questions," you don't need a chart. You need a different conversation.

Push the answer to where the decision happens

The best analytics work is invisible: it puts the right number in front of the right person at the moment they're making a choice. A dashboard nobody opens is a chart that wandered.

Charts don't make decisions. People do. Build for the people.

Most operations are behind where they could be.
